A BIRD WILL SOAR was released from Dutton Children’s Books in Fall 2021. At its heart, it is a story about family. How a family can heal together while letting each member soar on their own. I hope that children reading the book can see their own families in the story, and more importantly, see that there is space in this world for all kinds of families, all kinds of healing, and all kinds of feelings.
The book is told through poetry, prose, and emails. There are birds, and walks in the woods, a German shorthaired pointer, and a boy named Axel. It is my best attempt to say the things about instincts and intuition that I wanted to hear when I was younger and I want to say to children today.
Below you will find curriculum connections for the book: discussion questions, writing activities, S.T.E.A.M. extensions and a list of companion books.
